A Birding Trip to Peru
Page 4

After a couple days at Cock of the Rock Lodge, we continued downhill to the end of the road and a short boat ride to Amazonia Lodge for a few more days, before heading downriver on a seven hour ride to the Manu Wilderness Lodge.

Flowers and Waterfalls
Manu Wildlife Center has a small canopy platform about 92 feet up in a tree (or as Huw would say, 28 meters), super for looking out over the forest and seeing a number of birds difficult to observe from the ground. A little tricky if you're acrophobic, particularly when a herd of excited birders in boots galumph over to see what's in the scope. We even went up one night and got great looks at a nearby Spectacled Owl -- reactions were mixed on whether or not it's easier coming down in the dark.

The Hoatzin is a most prehistoric looking and sounding bird -- couldn't help but take some pictures of them.
